DISTRICT GOVERNOR UNVEILS BOLD VISION FOR EXPANDED HUMANITARIAN SERVICE, YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY IMPACT
A Celebration of Leadership and Rotary Excellence
The Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro hosted the District Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Rotarian Layi Abidoye, accompanied by his wife, Dr. Mrs. Derin Abidoye, and members of his cabinet, during his Official Visit on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, as part of the club’s weekly fellowship. The visit provided an opportunity to review the club’s notable achievements, strengthen collaboration with district leadership, and present strategic initiatives for the 2026–2027 Rotary Year.
The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of the Outstanding Leadership Award to the Immediate Past President, Rotarian Engr. Alexander Chukwu, in recognition of his visionary leadership, distinguished humanitarian service, and exceptional contributions that positioned the club among the leading Rotary clubs in District 9112.
District Governor Sets the Agenda for Greater Humanitarian Impact
In his keynote address, District Governor Abidoye commended the club’s impactful healthcare intervention at Odan General Hospital and encouraged members to expand their humanitarian reach through Rotary Global Grants and strategic partnerships. He disclosed that Rotary District 9112 has secured the support of a United States-based foundation committed to donating 1,000 hearing aids for humanitarian interventions across the district.
He also proposed the establishment of a Rotary Club of Good Health at Odan General Hospital, encouraged stronger collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra East, participation in the Rotary Peace Institute, the organisation of inter-school debate competitions, and support for the club’s “Pad a Girl Child” initiative. The Club President affirmed that the hospital club project was already underway and also announced plans to adopt and brand a public park as a lasting Rotary landmark within the community.
A Year of Exceptional Achievement and Lasting Service
Presenting the club’s appraisal, Immediate Past President Rotarian Engr. Alexander Chukwu highlighted an exceptional Rotary year in which the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro emerged as the Overall Best Club in Rotary District 9112 among more than 100 clubs. The club also attained third position globally in Rotary Public Image, received several district awards in service, membership growth, Rotary Foundation giving, district dues compliance, and public image, increased its membership from 54 to 81 Rotarians, chartered a new Rotary club, and ranked third overall in Rotary Zone 22, which covers Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. He further highlighted the club’s humanitarian outreach to the Ikoyi Maximum Correctional Centre, where seven inmates with minor offences regained their freedom through legal intervention, while unveiling plans for a large-scale crime prevention campaign for primary school pupils.
District Leaders Applaud Ikoyi Metro’s Commitment
District Governor Abidoye commended the club for sponsoring 50 participants for the 2026 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), describing the initiative as a strategic investment in future leaders. The club also received commendations from the Chairman of the RYLA Committee, Assistant Governor Dr. Richard Edi, and the Chairman of the District Conference (DISCON) 2027 Planning Committee, Past Assistant Governor Tayo Adelaja, who praised the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro for its exceptional financial, moral, and physical support for district programmes and youth development initiatives.
Fellowship, Recognition and Investment in Education
The official fellowship commenced with the Rotary Grace, followed by presentations on the Rotary Four-Way Test by Rotarian Agatha Adesigbin and the Object of Rotary by Rotarian Gbenga Awosika, PHF, reaffirming Rotary’s enduring values of integrity, fellowship, and selfless service. The club also honoured District Governor Rotarian Layi Abidoye, his spouse Dr. Mrs. Derin Abidoye, and members of the District Cabinet with special gifts and awards, presented on behalf of the club by its new Club President, Rotarian Emeka Nwosu, supported by Past District Governor Rita Ejezie. In further demonstration of its commitment to education, the club presented Educational Support Grants of ₦250,000 each to Iretiola Senior Secondary School, Falomo; Girls Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi; and Government College, Osborne, Ikoyi, reaffirming its dedication to nurturing future leaders through quality education.

The memorable visit concluded with a toast to Rotary fellowship and the rendition of the Nigerian National Anthem, leaving members inspired to pursue even greater humanitarian achievements. With renewed determination, the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships, expanding healthcare and educational interventions, empowering young people, and creating sustainable impact across communities. Guided by Rotary’s enduring motto, Service Above Self, the club continues to exemplify excellence in humanitarian service and leadership within Rotary International District 9112 and beyond.
