ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT OLAYINKA HAKEEM BABALOLA LEADS HISTORIC INSTALLATION AS LANRE ADEDOYIN BOWS OUT WITH PRIDE

At Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, hundreds of Rotarians, traditional rulers, captains of industry, professionals and distinguished guests gathered on Saturday, July 4, 2026, to witness a defining moment in the history of Rotary International District 9112.
The occasion marked the official installation of Rotarian Olayioye (Layi) Abidoye as the 3rd District Governor of Rotary International District 9112 for the 2026–2027 Rotary year. More than a change of leadership, the ceremony celebrated Rotary’s enduring commitment to humanitarian service, fellowship and transformational leadership under the Rotary International theme, “Create Lasting Impact.”
AN ASSEMBLY OF DISTINGUISHED PERSONALITIES
The installation attracted an impressive gathering of eminent personalities whose presence underscored the significance of the occasion.
Serving as Father of the Day was Past District Governor Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, OFR, mni, the revered doyen of Rotary and former Minister of Health. Prof. Oluwatoyin Ashiru, OON, renowned engineer and industrialist, chaired the ceremony, while the Royal Father of the Day, His Royal Majesty Oba Dr. Oyetunde Olumuyiwa Ojo, Ogunbodun I, the Olona of Ada Land, offered royal blessings.
The audience was inspired by Babatunde Kwame Ogala, OFR, SAN, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Lagos State University, whose keynote address challenged Rotarians to remain committed to ethical leadership, integrity and purposeful service.
The ceremony was further dignified by the presence of the Rotary International President, Rotarian Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, whose attendance highlighted the growing importance of District 9112 within the global Rotary family.
Also present were District Governor Bukola Bakare of District 9111, members of the League of Past District Governors, District Governor-Elect Rotarian Uyi Sowobi, District Governor-Nominee Rotarian Ehi Ibraimah, District Rotaract Representative Rotaractor Michael Ekerin, Assistant Governors, Club Presidents, Rotaractors, Interactors and Rotarians from across Nigeria.
A WELCOME ROOTED IN ROTARY’S VISION
Welcoming guests, Assistant Governor Adekemi Ololade Folorunsho, Chairman of the Planning Committee, described the ceremony as more than the installation of a District Governor.
She said it was a celebration of Rotary’s enduring ideals of fellowship, continuity and service, urging members to embrace the new Rotary year by implementing projects that would truly Create Lasting Impact in their communities.
LANRE ADEDOYIN BOWS OUT WITH PRIDE
In an emotional farewell address, the Immediate Past District Governor, Rotarian Lanre Adedoyin, reflected on the milestones recorded during his administration and thanked Rotarians across District 9112 for their unwavering support.
He stated that his administration recorded remarkable progress in membership growth, fundraising, the establishment of new clubs and increased giving to The Rotary Foundation, adding that these achievements strengthened the district for future generations.
“I have left the affairs of District 9112 better than the way I met it,” he declared to resounding applause.
THE HISTORIC EXCHANGE OF THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S COLARETTE
The defining moment of the ceremony was the symbolic exchange of the District Governor’s Colarette, the official insignia of office representing the transfer of Rotary leadership.
In a solemn ceremony supervised by the Rotary International President, Rotarian Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, and assisted by senior Rotary leaders and distinguished dignitaries, the District Governor’s Colarette was ceremonially removed from Immediate Past District Governor Lanre Adedoyin and placed on District Governor Layi Abidoye, officially investing him as the 3rd District Governor of Rotary International District 9112.
The symbolic investiture was greeted with prolonged applause, representing the seamless transition of leadership and Rotary’s enduring commitment to Service Above Self.
A LIFE PREPARED FOR LEADERSHIP
District Governor Layi Abidoye’s emergence reflects decades of academic excellence, professional accomplishment and dedicated Rotary service.
A Pharmacist, Lawyer and Theologian, he has built an outstanding career in healthcare, legal practice, consultancy and entrepreneurship. His educational qualifications span Pharmacy, Business Administration, Law and Theology, while he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies.
Since joining the Rotary Club of Gbagada in 2001, he has served in numerous leadership positions and represented Rotary at international learning programmes in Mauritius, Brussels and Orlando, preparing him for the responsibility of leading District 9112.
A MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE AND LASTING IMPACT
In his acceptance speech, District Governor Abidoye expressed gratitude to God, his family, the Rotary Club of Gbagada and members of District 9112 for the confidence reposed in him.
Drawing inspiration from the story of Fred Hargesheimer, he reminded Rotarians that genuine gratitude is demonstrated through service to humanity.
Quoting the timeless saying, “Gratitude is the heart’s memory,” he challenged members to transform appreciation into action by creating projects that will positively impact lives for generations.
HONOURING CHAMPIONS OF HUMANITY
The ceremony also featured the presentation of Special Recognition Awards to distinguished personalities whose humanitarian contributions have positively impacted society.
Recipients included Alhaji Adewale Sonibare, Chief Mrs. Esther Abosede Ogundele, JP, Pastor Abayomi Adesanya, Chief Mrs. Funmi Sanni, Sir Ayodele E. Oghogho Othihiwa, alongside several other eminent Nigerians whose commitment to community development reflects Rotary’s ideals of Service Above Self.
A CELEBRATION OF FELLOWSHIP
The installation generated an overwhelming outpouring of goodwill, with congratulatory messages pouring in from friends, professional associates and well-wishers across Nigeria.
Rotarians from clubs throughout District 9112 were strongly represented, while neighbouring districts also attended in large numbers. Expectedly, the Rotary Club of Gbagada, the home club of the new District Governor, stood out with one of the largest delegations, proudly celebrating the emergence of one of its own.
A memorable highlight of the event was the ceremonial birthday cake-cutting in honour of the Rotary International President, Rotarian Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, reflecting Rotary’s spirit of friendship and global fellowship.
A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS
As the ceremony drew to a close, the investiture of the District Governor’s Colarette signalled the beginning of a new chapter for Rotary International District 9112.
With District Governor Olayioye (Layi) Abidoye now at the helm, the district embarks on the 2026–2027 Rotary year with renewed purpose and a shared commitment to Create Lasting Impact through compassionate leadership, stronger fellowship and sustainable humanitarian service.
