I am a Professional Nurse practicing in Huston, Texas, United States of America.
What inspires you to set it up? Egbe Bobamayegun Obinrin Ireakari
Born out of my passion to give back to the community, I was once a member of one age group, but their Ideology does not align with my own vision. All they do is party, buying Aso Ebi fabrics. My choice is to start Egbe Bobamayegun. Obinrin Ireakari Akile Ijebu is aiming for services to humanity and changing people’s perspectives about Ijebu age grades.
Tell us about your age grade.
Egbe Bobamayegun Obinrin Ireakari Akile Ijebu was established in the year 2020 with the aim of bringing together professionals from different backgrounds but with the same quality of mind. We are not party people; we buy our age-grade uniform once a year. We do more empowerment programs and networking. We have our Otun Iyalode in the person of Barrister Mrs. Tosin Abike to handle any form of conflict that may arise within the age-grade members. She has the power of attorney to remove anyone who refuses to abide by our rules.
Can you share with us your experience running your age-grade group?
It takes only patience and good listening ability to coordinate women of different ages because you will receive different types of complaints from members.
When it comes to choosing new members, what are the qualities you look out for?
Generosity and law-abiding people. One must be generous with their time, treasure, and talent. Though we understand fingers are not equal, we must contribute our own quota. We don’t inconvenience our members.
Is your age grade meant for only Ijebu Ode Indegenes?
Not at all. One of my best friends, who is from Delta State but married Ijebu man is our member; some women are from Abeokuta. What counts is your readiness to render service to humanity and make Ijebu Land a better place.
What are the benefits one can derive from being a member of Egbe?
Bobamayegun Obinrin has a benefit of association, we are out to lift each other up, network, lean on one another’s shoulders, and support our members when the need arises.
What distinguishes your age grade from others?
Love alone. We dwell in love and harmony.
Apart from the Ojude Oba Festival, does your age grade have other activities?
We do organize empowerment programs during our annual anniversary, we do celebrate the new year, Christmas party and Easter celebration are inclusive. We are happy people.
You are based in the United States of America; how do you coordinate your members?
God made it easy. With the help of the internet, we hold Hybrid meetings. In fact, I am more on ground than those in Nigeria. I make sure I create more time for my members and the age-grade activities.
On the 1st of July, you celebrated your birthday. What are your wishes for the new age?
I pray for more of God’s mercy in all its ramifications and the grace not to separate from the love of God.
Who is your role model?
Anyone with a progressive mindset.
Considering the quality of your age-grade fabrics, one will conclude they are designed for only elites.
Not at all. The truth is that it is not about what you are wearing but what you make out of it. Most of the time, our fabrics are not expensive, but it is our individual capacity to design them that will determine what will happen. We are very simple and not expensive.
What are your recommendations to Nigerians in this era of fuel subsidy removal?
Good question, because in the first place, there is nothing like a subsidy; all we have is scams and some cabal robbing off our national resources. We should be rest assured that with time everything will be in place and the situation will normalize. The Government will be able to use our money for national development.
