CULTURAL ADVANCEMENT AS ALAGA INDUSTRY EXPANDS FRONTIERS WITH MASS INDUCTION OF OVER 700 MEMBERS

The large-scale induction marks a defining step toward professionalism, unity, and national recognition for Nigeria’s traditional wedding coordination profession.

In a historic milestone for cultural preservation and professional development, the Alaga Industry took a major leap forward with the successful induction of over 700 members during its second formal induction ceremony. Far from a routine gathering, the event marked a significant transition from informal practice to a structured, nationally recognized, and rapidly growing cultural profession.

Set against a backdrop of pride, dignity, and celebration, the ceremony brought together seasoned practitioners, new inductees, and key industry leaders united by a shared vision: to elevate standards, preserve heritage, and position the Alaga profession as an organized and economically significant body.

A CEREMONY ROOTED IN UNITY AND FAITH
The induction began with prayers from both Christian and Muslim faiths, reflecting the diversity and inclusiveness of the Industry. This was followed by the rendition of the National Anthem, reinforcing a shared sense of national identity and purpose.
The Chairman of the Event Planning Committee, Mrs. Olufunke Sorinola, who also serves as Vice Coordinator of the Alaga Industry, delivered the welcome address. She warmly received the inductees, wished them a successful ceremony, and commended the executive team for their unwavering support and dedication to the growth of the Industry.

LEADERSHIP CALLS FOR UNITY AND STRUCTURE
The Grand Patron, Yeye Aare Omotayo Fakorede, passionately called for unity among practitioners, describing the Industry as a “united house” built on a common purpose. She emphasized that unity is the pillar of growth, declaring, “A united house will go far.”
She also revealed plans to formally register the Alaga Industry with the Federal Ministry of Art and Culture — a crucial step toward federal recognition and institutional legitimacy.

Supporting this vision, Mrs. Christina Titilayo Adegboye, Coordinator of the Alaga Industry, announced plans for a unified national training program for practitioners. She further disclosed that future Industry events will extend beyond Lagos State, giving other regions the opportunity to host and participate in this rapidly growing cultural movement.

PROFESSIONALISM TAKES CENTER STAGE
Speakers at the event stressed the need for professional standards and a minimum training curriculum to guide practitioners in all aspects of traditional wedding coordination. Key focus areas include:
Cultural expectations and etiquette
Traditional songs
Emotional intelligence
Conflict resolution
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Inductees were urged to see themselves not as individuals, but as professionals representing a structured organization. They were encouraged to adopt official client documentation, including standardized forms, to strengthen credibility and business practices.
Professional ethics and etiquette were strongly emphasized, alongside the importance of personal well-being and work–life balance. One notable reminder resonated deeply:
“Budget for your personal holiday. Don’t work until you break down.”

ECONOMIC AND CORPORATE INSIGHTS
Adding a corporate perspective, Dr. Ademuyiwa Ashimolowo, Chairman of Mabygold Limited — a renowned real estate company specializing in land sales and student hostels across Nigerian universities — spoke on the economic potential of the Alaga profession, estimating its value at over ₦100 billion annually. He emphasized the importance of a strong digital presence, including a dedicated website, to expand visibility and professional opportunities.

ORDER, IDENTITY, AND RAPID GROWTH
The induction was carefully organized according to members’ names and categories, demonstrating the Industry’s commitment to order, structure, and fairness. Each inductee was formally recognized, reinforcing the professional standards now being championed.
Addressing members, Erelu Dr. Mrs. Bisola Bamidele advised them to remain within the group or category stated on their certificates to ensure organizational clarity and proper documentation. She disclosed that the Alaga Industry is preparing to induct over 1,400 candidates in future phases and affirmed its readiness to pursue government recognition and consular acknowledgment for international opportunities.

PRESERVING HERITAGE, CULTURE, AND DIGNITY
Beyond coordination and crowd management, the Alaga was described as a custodian of culture and an image maker. Every item presented during traditional ceremonies carries symbolic significance — from bitter kola and honey to holy books such as the Bible and the Quran. Understanding these symbols elevates practitioners from performers to cultural educators.
Mrs. Fola Amoke, retired Director of Education and Mother of the Day, stressed that every Alaga must understand the fundamentals of Yoruba traditional weddings and the cultural meaning of all ceremonial items.
Alhaja Titilola Onitiri, CEO of Alayo Ventures, addressed appearance and cultural dignity, urging all newly inducted members to prioritize wearing Iro and Buba. As custodians of culture, she emphasized, their attire must always reflect elegance, respect, and tradition.
The presence of Alaga members from Canada further highlighted the Industry’s growing global reach, reinforcing its transformation into a structured cultural institution with international relevance.

A FUTURE BUILT ON STRUCTURE AND HERITAGE
The second induction ceremony stood as a celebration of heritage, professionalism, and a brighter future. With unity, structure, ethical standards, and corporate practices now at its core, the Alaga Industry is stepping confidently into a new era — one where tradition meets organization, and culture evolves with purpose.
The landmark event, held at Funplex Event Center, Magodo GRA, Lagos, on Tuesday, February 3rd, with all key leaders in attendance, was widely regarded as a resounding success — signaling a cultural and professional boost for the Alaga Industry and the thousands it serves.
