What inspired you to venture into event planning?
My journey into events planning is deeply rooted in passion, creativity, and a desire to bring people together in moments they will never forget. I’ve always believed that every celebration is a story waiting to be told, and I wanted to be the one to help script it beautifully. Growing up—and even in my professional life—I’ve always had a keen eye for aesthetics, organization, and the finer details that make events truly magical. But beyond the glamour and excitement, what truly inspired me was the opportunity to create joy, build memories, and offer seamless experiences that leave lasting impressions.
Event planning is more than decor and timelines; it’s about understanding people, respecting their vision, and delivering excellence with love and precision. My background in logistics, transport planning, and community organizing gave me a solid foundation in coordination, structure, and management—skills that transferred naturally into event execution.
Ultimately, I ventured into event planning because I wanted to turn passion into purpose, and transform ordinary gatherings into unforgettable experiences. It’s a profession that allows me to serve, to celebrate others, and to express my creativity—one event at a time
Did you have prior experience or work for an Events company before taking the boldly entrepreneurial step of starting yours?
I didn’t have any prior hands-on experience with an event planning company when I first became interested in the industry. However, I was inspired early on by my elder sister, Dr. Oyindamola Okenla, who owned an event company in Nigeria back in the early ’90s. But now a Chicago USA based Event Professional Watching her work sparked something in me—I admired her creativity, coordination, and the joy her events brought to people. At the time, I hadn’t yet decided if I would follow in her footsteps, but the seed was planted. Years later, that spark grew into a passion. I began to seriously explore the event planning industry—learning, researching, and seeking the best ways to develop myself professionally. That journey led me to join the Association of Professional Party Planners and Event Managers of Nigeria (APPOEMN), where I found a network of like-minded professionals and valuable learning opportunities. Since then, I have attended numerous trainings and seminars both within Nigeria and internationally. Through continuous learning, dedication, and commitment to excellence, I earned my certifications and evolved into a seasoned event planner.
Viewing from outside the box event planning appears to be very lucrative how true is this narrative ?
From the outside, event planning often appears glamorous and lucrative—you see beautiful décor, happy clients, and high-profile events. But the truth is more layered. Here’s a breakdown of how lucrative event planning really is, from both insider and practical perspectives:
Why It Can Be Lucrative
High Demand: There’s always something to celebrate—weddings, birthdays, corporate functions, funerals, product launches, etc. This creates a steady demand for professional planners.
Scalability: Successful planners can scale up from small events to large ones, charge premium fees, or even build an agency with multiple staff.
Diverse Revenue Streams: Beyond planning, you can earn from rentals (chairs, canopies, lighting), décor, catering, training upcoming planners, and consulting.
Repeat Clients & Referrals: When you deliver well, referrals keep flowing. Events breed other events.
But here’s the Reality Behind the Glamour
High Competition: The industry is saturated in some areas, and clients may choose cheaper, untrained vendors. You must consistently stand out.
Upfront Investment: You may need to invest in equipment, marketing, training, and staffing before you start making real profits.
Seasonal Income: Some months may be very busy (e.g., “ember” months), while others can be dry.
Pressure & Stress: It’s physically and mentally demanding. A single mistake at an event can cost your reputation.
Cashflow Management: Many clients pay in parts or delay balances. If you’re not financially disciplined, it may seem like you’re making money, but you’re not truly profitable.
Final Verdict: Yes, event planning can be lucrative, especially when done professionally, with strategic branding, excellent service delivery, and strong client relationships. However, it’s not a “get-rich-quick” field. It requires passion, patience, skill, and strong business acumen to truly reap the financial rewards.

How La Dots PartyCity Got Its Name?
– A Journey of Passion and Purpose
People often ask me, “How did you come up with the name La Dots PartyCity?” And every time, I smile—because the name holds a powerful story, one rooted in passion, creativity, and purpose.
I didn’t start off with just one aspect of events. I have always been a multi-talented individual. I’m not just an event planner—I’m also a caterer, a food vendor, a fruit designer, a mocktail mixologist, an event designer, and a decorator. I handle everything that revolves around parties. And yes, I started with kiddies’ parties!
When I was registering my business over a decade ago, I knew I didn’t want to be boxed into one service. I wanted a name that would reflect everything about parties—from planning and catering to hosting, logistics, and decorations. That’s why I carefully chose the name: La Dots PartyCity.
What Does “La Dots” Mean?
La Dots” is actually coined from my name—Dotun. I took the “DOT” and simply added “La”, which is a French article that gives the name a classy, global flair. So, La Dots became my unique signature.
What are the services you render at Ladots PartyCity?
Then came PartyCity—a perfect expression of my vision to create a one-stop city for all party and event needs. Whether it’s:
•Weddings • Birthday • Corporate events • Retirement celebrations

We do it all. From ushers to waiters, decorators to planners, mocktail bars to fruit carving, catering props to decor rentals, and even logistics—La Dots PartyCity is your full event experience.
“You’re Doing Too Much” When I started, many people questioned me. They said, “Why are you doing everything?” But they didn’t understand—I wasn’t just trying to do everything. I had designed my business to be a complete party solution from day one. That’s how I registered it. I wasn’t confused—I was intentional. And here we are today, 12 years later, still standing strong, growing, and making parties beautiful across the city.
What makes Ladots PartyCity stand out among its peers?

We have different existing associations and tribes for event planners are you a member of any , and what are the benefits associated to joining such groups?
Yes I am a member of APPOEMN and APFSPN Why I Joined APPOEMN
In the event industry, there are several professional associations to choose from. But for me, joining APPOEMN—the Association of Professional Party Organizers and Event Managers of Nigeria—was a strategic decision.
I chose APPOEMN because I wanted to be more than just talented; I wanted to be trained, exposed, and connected. The association offered me access to trainings, seminars, and conferences that helped sharpen my skills and expand my knowledge of the event industry.
Beyond education, APPOEMN opened doors to networking opportunities. I was able to meet like-minded professionals, mentors, and collaborators—people who challenged and inspired me to grow. Through this platform, I learned, unlearned, and relearned—building confidence and credibility as a certified and professional event planner. Joining APPOEMN wasn’t just a membership—it was an investment in my vision, brand, and excellence.
Aside from event planning, what other skills do you possess?
My Professional Network: More Than Just Planning. As I deepened my journey in the events industry, I realized the power of professional associations in shaping one’s growth. While joining APPOEMN gave me the foundation for event planning, management, and organization, I also needed a community that spoke the language of food, creativity, and presentation. That’s why I joined the Association of Professional Food Service Providers of Nigeria (APFSPN).
At APFSPN, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with caterers, fruit designers, mocktail drink vendors, and other food-focused event professionals who understand the value of presentation, innovation, and service excellence. Through this network, I’ve learned new techniques, improved my culinary craft, and gained access to collaborative opportunities that continue to elevate the La Dots PartyCity brand. These associations have not only refined my skills but also expanded my horizon—proving that when you surround yourself with professionals, your growth becomes unstoppable.
Strength in Community: Joining NECA NNEW. Beyond APPOEMN and APFSPN, I also became a proud member of NECA’s Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW). For me, learning never stops—and growth is best achieved in a community of passionate, like-minded women. Through NNEW, I found myself within the Catering and Hospitality sector, where I can engage with other female entrepreneurs who share my passion for food, service, and customer experience. The platform has given me access to trainings, mentorship opportunities, and business support that are invaluable to my entrepreneurial journey.
Most importantly, NNEW has given me something priceless—sisterhood and collaboration. Being able to share, grow, and build alongside other visionary women in catering and hospitality has expanded not just my business network, but my mindset. Together, we rise—and together, we thrive.

People do things for several reasons; but something must inspire them. What are the sources of your inspiration?
“Yes, my source of inspiration is the desire to turn challenges into creativity. I’m inspired by the people I serve, the stories I tell through my work, and the legacy I want to leave behind.
The impact I make—seeing people smile, empowering others, and transforming lives and spaces through creativity and purpose—is what truly drives me.”
Was there anytime you ever thought of quitting and seeking other green pasture?
Have I ever thought of quitting or looking for greener pastures? Absolutely—many times
There are moments I get overwhelmed from overworking myself, juggling multiple responsibilities. I’ve faced harsh words and disrespect from clients and guests who, in trying to undermine my work, fail to realize that I am a professional in every sense of the word. I’m a Registered Town Planner, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and a dedicated Logistics, Transport & Supply Chain Professional. I have a full-time 8 to 4 job. I belong to several professional bodies. And yet, because I also express my creativity through event planning and catering, some people treat the profession like it’s for riff raffs or nonentities.
They don’t see the structure, the strategy, the sacrifice behind what we do. Yes, those moments of insult and misunderstanding can make you want to quit. But my passion keeps pulling me forward. It keeps me grounded. It reminds me why I started. I’m still standing. I’m still rising. Stronger.
How did you raise the initial capital for the business?
Starting La Dots Partycity was a journey of discipline, determination, and deep gratitude.
I began by saving diligently from my time working with a private shipping company—SIFAX Shipping Company, now known as SIFAX Group. In addition to this, I earned and saved money from my long-standing fashion design business, La Dots Creations, which had already been running since 2003. Another source of support came from the proceeds of my inheritance—income generated from my late father’s property. It was a blessing that contributed significantly to laying the foundation for the business. And most importantly, I received strong financial and emotional support from my dearest husband. His belief in my dream, both in cash and in kind, gave me the push I needed to turn vision into reality. I deeply appreciate him for being my rock and unwavering support system.
As reputable events planner share with us your unforgettable experience so far
My Unforgettable Event Planning Experience . As a reputable event planner, one experience that stands out for me happened in 2019. It remains my most challenging — yet most fulfilling — event to date. #kolamide2019 I had the honour of planning a grand celebration for a Mexican-based Nigerian couple. It was a 1,500-capacity event held in a 2,000-capacity hall, and I wasn’t just the event decorator — I was also the caterer and the kiddies’ entertainer! The couple trusted me so much that I practically became their co-event planner.
At first, I was scared and overwhelmed. The pressure was intense, but thanks to the unwavering support of my incredible spouse — who believed in my capacity to deliver — and the dedication of my ever-reliable team at La Dots PartyCity, we pulled it off!
✅ The decor was flawless
✅ The catering was top-notch
✅ The kiddies’ corner? Absolutely perfect — the children had non-stop fun!
The event was a huge success, and the couple who came to me as clients have now become family. The best part? It was a referral — proof that excellence always speaks for itself. This experience reminded me that challenges only exist to birth creativity, growth, and unforgettable results.
If you have one piece of advice to give someone just starting out, especially in business or event planning, based on your journey, what will it be?
“Start with what you have, where you are — and stay consistent.” Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. I started La Dots Partycity with personal savings, support from my fashion business, inheritance, and my husband’s belief in me — not with millions, but with passion, discipline, and vision. Stay professional, stay humble, and build relationships. People may not understand your craft at first, but consistency will speak louder than doubt. Most importantly, surround yourself with a solid support system and never forget why you started.
