Eleven Rotary Clubs Launch New Rotary Year with Major Community Health Intervention in Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria — In a significant demonstration of Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self, the Rotary eClub of One Nigeria, District 9126, in collaboration with 10 Rotary Clubs in District 9112, has embarked on a major Maternal and Child Health and Disease Prevention and Treatment project at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
The impactful initiative, held at LASUTH to commemorate Maternal and Child Health Month in Rotary, commenced with the presentation of maternity kits to expectant mothers, alongside a range of free medical screening and health education services.
The collaborative project brought together 11 Rotary Clubs from the two Rotary districts, demonstrating the power of partnership and collective action in addressing critical community health needs.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the President of the Rotary eClub of One Nigeria, Rotarian Olusike Onafowokan, Rotarian Sogo Timothy, together with Rotarian Ademola Lawal (PHF) and Rotarian Gbenga Akinola, highlighted the importance of the collaboration.
They explained that the initiative was designed to promote maternal and child health, support expectant mothers, encourage healthy lifestyles, and contribute to disease prevention and treatment—key areas of focus of Rotary International.
The beneficiaries, comprising a large number of expectant mothers, received free blood sugar tests, blood pressure checks, vital signs screening, preliminary medical assessments, and medical consultations. These services were particularly important in view of the physiological changes and health risks associated with pregnancy.
The programme also featured an interactive health education session delivered by Dr. Modupe Adedeji, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at LASUTH, who provided the beneficiaries with valuable information on maternal health, disease prevention, and healthy pregnancy practices.
In her remarks, the spouse of the Club Secretary, Rotarian Sogo Timothy, expressed her delight at being part of the collaborative initiative. She noted that projects of this nature play an important role in promoting maternal and child health, encouraging healthy lifestyles, facilitating early detection of health conditions, and ultimately contributing to the reduction of maternal and child mortality.
She reaffirmed Rotary’s commitment to supporting initiatives that protect the lives and wellbeing of mothers and children within the communities it serves.
The event was attended by the District Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Rotarian Olayioye Abidoye, who was represented by Past Assistant Governor Tony Eigbokhan, as well as the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, a member of the Rotary Club of Gbagada.
Also present were members of the collaborating Rotary Clubs, the LASUTH medical community, project volunteers, and the numerous expectant mothers who benefited from the intervention.
